Grocery Shopping

Weight Watcher’s SmartPoints diet does a specific ‘Shop’ book. This book is really useful for you to look at specific branded products or products that are own make and therefore belong to a specific supermarket. By using the book, it means that when you go shopping, or before you go if you’re really well prepared, you can make smart choices about the food you purchase to eat. The ‘Shop’ book, gives you details for the following supermarkets: Aldi, Asda, Budgens, Iceland, Lidl, M&S, Morrisons, Sainsbury’s, Tesco, The Co-operative and Waitrose.

If you do think about the meals you’ll eat during the week, before you go shopping, you can make shopping lists so this will mean you’ll be less likely to impulse buy and put naughty things into the basket or trolley. You can also pre-prepare how many points your meals will be before you get to the shop.

It can be a really good idea to take the ‘Shop’ book with you, when you go grocery shopping, because then if you see some food or a meal whilst you’re shopping that you think looks nice, you can look up its point value, and work out whether you think it’s worth those points per day.

By using the ‘Shop’ book, you can see which foods have the lowest points in a category, for example whether that’s basic foods, cereals, treats etc. There are often choices to be made, and making the right choices, can make your SmartPoints go much further and be more filling and satisfying for you.

Whilst manufacturers of products may change their ingredients slightly, the ‘Shop’ book should give you an approximate guide. Generally, the book is listed per item, ie cereal is ‘just’ cereal and doesn’t take into account the points you’d need for the milk to go with it too. The ‘Shop’ book lists over 16,000 food and drink products. Each well-known supermarket listed in the book, then is broken down into 16 areas of: bakery, biscuits, chocolate and sweets, cereals and cereal bars, chilled prepared food, cooking ingredients, cooking sauces, marinades and meal kits, crisps, savoury snacks and nuts, dairy and eggs, drinks, fish, meat & poultry, food to go, fresh fruit and vegetables, frozen foods, home baking, tins, packets and jars and vegetarian foods. These 16 sub-categories are intended so that you can easily compare like-for-like items. Clearly the book covers many typical items, but supermarkets bring out new items daily. For any of these items that aren’t accounted for, you can use a SmartPoints calculator, you can use this via Weight Watchers Online and a Mobile App.

The ’Shop’ book contains a ‘no count’ list if that is the way you have decided to follow the SmartPoints diet, it can be a useful reminder of the types of food that you should be buying at the supermarket.

At the very back of the book, there’s a part of the book called ‘Brands’ which is quite useful regardless of which Supermarket you happen to be in. Again, this brand
